Unit 1

Within this unit we look at the Welsh age of princes, studying the kingdoms of medieval Wales and the people who inhabited them. We will focus on some of the key characters who have shaped Welsh history, culture and identity. We will develop source analysis skills investigating the death of Llywelyn ein Llyw Olaf, research skills investigating Gerrallt Cymro’s journey through Wales and the impact of Owain Glyndwr in shaping our identity.

Unit 2

In this unit we investigate the life of medieval people with a greater focus on the experience of peasants and villeins. We will investigate life in a medieval village and town, comparing the two. We will look at medieval hygiene and focus on investigating beliefs about the symptoms, cures and causes of the Black Death and consider it’s impact on medieval society.

Unit 3

With this unit we will investigate medieval warfare by examining castle design. We will look at the development of castles through time, from the wooden Motte and Bailey through to the huge stone structures of Edward I’s Ring of Steel. Pupils will investigate methods of attacking and defending castles, siege warfare and castles as a method of control.

Exciting Experiences

In Year 7 we have the opportunity to visit Wrexham museum to learn about the medieval history of the area and handle some artefacts from the medieval Wrexham area. We will also have the opportunity to visit a local castle to continue our journey through medieval history.
