Transition to Darland High School
Starting secondary school is an exciting milestone. At Darland High School, we are committed to making the move from Year 6 to Year 7 a positive, welcoming and well-supported experience for every pupil and their family.
We understand that moving to a larger school brings new opportunities, new routines and greater independence. It can also bring plenty of questions. Our transition programme is designed to help pupils feel confident, prepared and part of the Darland community from the very beginning.
This page is your central place for information about joining Darland. Here you will find key dates, information about admissions and transition events, uniform and equipment guidance, transition activities, support for pupils and families, and answers to frequently asked questions. Autumn Term
Choosing Your Secondary School
During the autumn term of Year 6, parents and carers apply for their child’s secondary school place through their home local authority.
Darland’s Open Evening gives prospective pupils and their families the opportunity to explore the school, meet staff and pupils, visit subject areas and experience what life at Darland is like.
It is a chance to ask questions, discover the opportunities available and see the welcoming community that makes Darland special.

Spring Term
Offers and Getting Ready
On National Offer Day, parents and carers are informed by their local authority which secondary school place has been offered to their child.
Once places have been confirmed, we begin working closely with our new Year 7 families. We will share important information, answer questions and make sure that pupils and parents feel prepared for the move to secondary school.
Families may also be invited to events and opportunities to find out more about school life, meet key staff and begin getting to know Darland before September.
Summer Term
Getting to Know You
During the summer term, our transition team works closely with primary schools to ensure that we know every pupil well before they join us.
We speak with Year 6 teachers about pupils’ strengths, friendships and any support that may help them settle successfully. This means that staff can put the right arrangements in place from the very beginning.
Our Year 6 Transition Day gives pupils the opportunity to spend 2 full days at Darland. They will meet staff and peer mentors, spend time with their new form group, follow a sample timetable, take part in lessons and become familiar with the school site.
Pupils will also receive information about their form tutor, school routines, organisation, travel, lunch arrangements and the exciting opportunities available to them in Year 7.
Parents and carers will be invited to a New Parents and Carers Evening, where they can meet key members of staff and find out more about the practical arrangements for September.
