At Darland High School, our Key Stage 3 curriculum forms a central part of our world-class offer, providing every learner with a broad, balanced and ambitious education that prepares them for future learning, life and work. Rooted in a strong sense of cynefin, our curriculum helps pupils understand who they are, where they come from and how they connect with their local community, Wales and the wider world. Across Years 7 to 9, learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build their knowledge, skills, confidence and independence over time. In Year 7, the focus is on establishing strong foundations, developing essential subject knowledge, vocabulary and positive learning habits, while supporting pupils to settle successfully into secondary school. In Year 8, learning increases in depth and challenge as pupils make connections between ideas, apply their knowledge in different contexts and develop greater independence, analysis and problem-solving skills. By Year 9, pupils are expected to engage with increasingly complex ideas, evaluate evidence, consider different perspectives, make informed judgements and communicate confidently using subject-specific language, while also preparing for their future pathways and the demands of Key Stage 4. Throughout Key Stage 3, literacy, numeracy and digital competence are developed across the curriculum alongside creativity, resilience, ethical understanding and wellbeing. The four purposes of the Curriculum for Wales remain at the heart of our approach, supporting every pupil to become an ambitious, capable learner; an enterprising, creative contributor; an ethical, informed citizen; and a healthy, confident individual. By the end of Year 9, pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to progress successfully into Key Stage 4 and beyond, reflecting our commitment to delivering a world-class educational experience in a school where better never stops.
